After Sculthorpe was converted to a VHB base during the years of 1944 to 1946, a special and unique feature was added under a shroud of secrecy...……...Atomic loading pits.                            These pits and infrastructure are the first known Atomic sites for USAF in the UK and follow on from the same design as the ones constructed on the Tinian Isle in which B-29s, Enola gay and Bockscar ended the 2nd world war.
Very little is known about the early years of the American Atomic deterrent in the UK, However here at the RAF Sculthorpe Heritage Centre, we have researched a large amount of information about the secretive years.
